Toofaan Movie Review – Amazon Prime Video, Farhan Akhtar, Mrunal Thakur

A generic sports film that has its heart at the right place. The story is about a small-time gangster Ajju Bhai and his journey to live a respectful life by becoming Aziz Ali boxer.
Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra juggles the film with authenticity and clichés of a regular sports film, it works in some scenes and then it doesn’t. Cinematographer Jay Oza captures the film beautifully and makes it look authentic. The film is 2 hours and 40 minutes long and the runtime feels that long. But the film hardly gets dull.

Performances are the usp of this film. Paresh Rawal is a legend, even in the most silent scenes, his eyes did the job. Watch out for the scene where Paresh Rawal is on the verge of breaking down but he doesn’t. It’s heartbreaking. Farhan totally carries the film on his shoulders. He portrays every emotion to almost perfection. His struggle, his will to become a respected man just to get his love of life seems believable. Mrunal Thakur is simply a breath of fresh air in this film. If Farhan is the heart then she is the soul of this film. Her emotional scenes hit you the most in the film. Her smile simply lightens up the frame every time she came on screen.

Toofaan isn’t a milestone of a film in any aspect and offers nothing new in the sports genre but it works because it has its heart in the right place. Watch out for the amazing performances and the emotional aspect.
